The story follows a young man named Kafka Hibino who dreams of joining an army that battles Kaiju, giant monsters that ravage Japan. Kafka makes a childhood promise to his friend Mina Ashiro to fight Kaiju.
But over time, Kafka gives up on his ambition and ends up working for Monster Sweeper Inc., a company that cleans up after Kaiju attacks.
One day, Kafka swallows a Kaiju and transforms into a Kaiju himself. He decides to fight the Kaiju using his new powers and reunites with Mina, who is now a captain in the army.
